These monuments were created at the Neolithic age approximately between 3000 BC and 14000 BC. These structures are very unique as the placement of stones is considered. Some studies say that these dolmens have different sizes. The larger dolmens may indicate the burial site of people who had high status in society. The dolmens are made of stones places on all four edges and another stone on the top known as the ‘cap stone’. These burial chambers have more than one chamber to rest the bodies of multiple persons. These dolmens are a treasure to archaeologists from all around the world and researches are going on based on these.
The Chinnar wildlife sanctuary is another place for sightseeing in Munnar. The sanctuary falls in both Kanthalloor and Marayoor panchayaths and has a rich variety of species including elephants, langurs, star tortoises, spotted deer, panther, a wide variety of snakes and white bison. Pambar and Chinnar are two rivers flowing through the sanctuary and the major water resources too. In 1984, the Chinnar wildlife sanctuary was declared as the protective region.
The season of flowers is the time at which tourism touches its peak whether it’s the northern Kashmir valleys or the southern flowering season, people keep rushing to feel the fragrance. The Neelakkurinji which is also known as Kurinji with the scientific name strobilanthes kunthiana, is the main attraction of Munnar in the flowering season because this purplish-blue coloured flower blooms once in 12 years and when it blooms it starts from July till October normally. The whole Munnar valley turns blue at this time and is a mesmerizing visual treat.
Let’s take a glimpse at the history of Munnar; long ago ill the 19th century; some tribes were the inhabitants of Munnar and it was unexplored until some British officials found the possibilities of a plantation and they got it for lease from the Royal family of Poonjar, who were then owned the property. The British formed a society and they started cultivating spices like cardamom and coffee. Later, the cultivations made way to the cultivation of tea and it became the signature of Munnar. During the midway of the 20th century, Munnar became famous for tourism, the scenic hills, the attractive and chilling climate made the place a favourite hub for tourists in a very short time.
