Chundan vallam or the traditional snake boat of Kerala has been an integral part of the culture. The boat races held annually celebrating both rituals and festivities are exciting events that honor the speed kings of the backwaters. Now in an effort to promote the noble tradition of boat races, Kerala Tourism is organizing the Champions Boat League across the backwaters in Kerala. Held over 12 different venues across the state, the league is conceptualized as an annual sporting event which showcases the mesmerizing backwaters while also aiming to promote the traditional festivals of the state. The league will include 12 races scheduled on intervening weekends.
The Champions Boat League was kicked off with the Nehru Trophy Boat Race in Alapuzha on August 31st and will conclude with the President’s Trophy Boat Race in Kollam on November 23rd. The winners will receive a cash prize of Rs. 25 lakhs and the first and second runners up will receive Rs. 15 lakhs and Rs. 10 lakhs, respectively. All races are held in the afternoons between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. The matches are broadcasted live on Star Sports 2, Star Sports 2 HD, Star Sports 1 Tamil & Asianet Plus at 4:00 pm and are also available to view on Hotstar.
