The hill station of Munnar is a popular holiday destination among domestic and international travelers alike. One who reaches Munnar can explore the stunning locale in many different ways. It can be a brief one-day trip which covers the important tourist spots or a three to four days stay to enjoy the hill station at its best or as a photographer, amateur and professional alike, who explores the mountains and wildlife. It is often said that foreign travelers enjoy Munnar to the fullest by venturing into unexplored routes and spots by walking around for days.
Here are the 10 must-visit places to include in a two-day trip to Munnar.
When traveling in the Coimbatore route from Munnar town, the first stop will be Rajamala at 13kms, which is also a part of the Eravikulam National Park. The endangered Nilgiri Tahr and the fabled Neelakurinji blooms are the highlights of Rajamala. Operating under the Kerala Forest department, one has to secure passes to visit Rajamala.
At a distance of 40kms from Munnar town, the second must-visit location is Marayoor. One can also visit Lakkam waterfalls enroute. Marayoor is famous for the sandalwood forests which are the only natural sandalwood forests in India. Marayoor jaggery is a popular souvenir to buy. From Marayoor, one should head to Kanthalloor to see the harvests of fruits like apple, plum etc. After also visiting the ancient Stone Age remains, reach back to Marayoor and go to Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary from there. Rare and endangered wildlife species including the star tortoises can be found here. The Forest Department offers trekking and jeep safari to explore the sanctuary under strict guidelines. From Chinnar, head to the Indira Gandhi National Park or the Aanaimalai Tiger Reserve, Amaravathi dam and crocodile farm etc. which are all located at the other side in Tamil Nadu. This completes a one-day trip in and around Munnar.
This is a major route for travelers and also the busiest one with many tourist spots. On taking a left after the Munnar town bridge and then the next right will lead to the KFDC Flower Garden at first and then the Photo Point and the Mattupetty Dam. Speed boating, pedal boating and adventure park are the activities to do in the dam. Echo Point, Kundala Dam and Top Station are the locations that follow. Top Station is at Tamil Nadu and offers a panoramic view of the Western Ghats while also providing views of Kolukkumalai which has the highest tea plantations in the world. Traveling 7kms into the forest from Top Station will reach Vattavada. It is a major winter crop and vegetable harvesting centre in Kerala and produces garlic, strawberry, plums, apple, passion fruits etc. all around the year.
In Kundala-Top Station route, one should not miss Yellapetty which is a go-to place for carrot, beans, cauliflower, cabbage etc. Another reason why Yellapetty should not be avoided is the breath-taking view of Meesapulimala seen straight ahead from there. After visiting the above destinations, reach back to Munnar town and visit the Blossom Park in Old Munnar and the fruit and vegetable market to complete a two-day trip which covered almost all must-visit spots in Munnar.
